Samsung - All The Way Up

forget. However, Apple had plenty of reasons to celebrate. First, they generated over $114 billion in revenue in Quarter 4 of 2020 alone but most importantly Apple overtook Samsung to become the world's biggest smartphone vendor by selling a record number of smartphones, over 90 million in the span of just 3 months.

Though Samsung was still on top in 2020 as a whole, but with some never seen before performance in Quarter 4, Apple was closing the gap. But courtesy of the Galaxy S21 lineup which is doing really good in many parts of the world, and also the new Galaxy A lineup, Samsung has managed to regain the top spot from Apple again.

The company is now once again the largest single mobile vendor globally in the first quarter of 2021.

According to a report by Strategy Analytics, Samsung sold 77 million smartphones in the first quarter that's between January to March with an increase of 32 percent year-over-year. Apple shipped 57 million iPhones worldwide, capturing second place with a 17% volume market share. As you can see, Samsung has managed to substantially increase the lead by selling 20 million more Galaxy phones than iPhones.

Xiaomi came in third with a 15 percent market share after shipping 49 million smartphones. Its Chinese rivals Oppo and Vivo took the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Unfortunately, Huawei didn't enough smartphones and has slipped into the category of others which is a shame since they were on track to become the number one before the sanctions were put on them.

All in all, global smartphone shipments have reached about 340 million units in total which is the highest growth since 2015. This is likely due to the pent-up demand following 2020, with the market rebounding along with the 5G handset market seeing impressive growth in China.

With that being said, Samsung said at the Exynos 2100 event that their next flagship product will use AMD GPU in Exynos chipsets. Everyone thought they were talking about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 since that was their next flagship product.

Even Ice Universe mentioned a couple of days ago that the chipset of the Z Fold 3 has been named Top Secret hinting the foldable flagship will indeed have the new AMD graphics. But turns out, that is not going to happen. Ice Universe tweeted out today that the Z Fold 3 will have the Snapdragon 888 chipset worldwide.

There won't be an Exynos 2100 variant. It also means that the smartphone will not debut with an Exynos chipset featuring AMD's Radeon graphics, which is a bummer since everyone was looking forward to it, to see how this partership would affect the mobile industry as a whole. It looks like we might have to wait a little longer to find that out perhaps at the Galaxy S22 launch event.

Or it's possible, Samsung may talk about it at the upcoming PC Unpacked Event on April 28th. In any case, rest assured I'll keep you posted. By the way, There's some good news as well. The Z Fold 3 will be 13 grams lighter than the Z Fold 2 which means the Z Fold 3 could weigh 269 grams compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 282 grams.

This is likely due to smaller batteries, a new Armor frame, and a polymer less OLED. Sammobile also confirms the handset will have some sort of IP rating but its likely just splash resistance IP53.
