Tips for Using a Green Screen at Home making youtube video

I want to give you some tips for shooting on a green screen at home. Green screen, or chroma keying, is a fairly simply concept but one that can be made very challenging if done incorrectly so I'm going to show you three things you should be doing to keep it as easy as possible.

The first and often most overlooked thing is to make sure whatever you're using for your green screen is smooth and clean. Wrinkles and dirty spots can cause dark areas that confuse the keying software.

The more consistent you can make your green screen the easier it will be to pull a clean key. The second point is to make sure you light the green screen separately from yourself. There are different ways to do this depending on the gear you have access to.

No matter how you do it the important thing is that the green screen is lit evenly across the area that will be behind you in your frame. Make sure you check your camera's exposure tools like histogram or waveform because these can be very useful in making sure your green screen is lit evenly. Remember, you don't need the entire frame to be green behind you. You only need the area that you'll be moving within. The rest of the space you can mask out with a garbage matte. The third thing is to use plenty of space.

Ideally, you want to push your camera away from you and zoom in. That'll make it so there's less area behind you that you need to cover with green. It'll also make it easier to keep the shadows from your lighting off of the green screen behind you. Remember, it's always worth it to spend that little extra time setting up so that your post-process can go more smoothly. Hope you guys learned something from this video.
